Abstract:
The literature review present work aims to analyze the importance of prison education in Brazil, using the deductive method. The National Federal Constitution, in its article 205, provides that education is a State duty and a right of all - based on that, it is intended to reflect on education for people deprived of liberty. If before, imprisonment only served to punish the individual, serving as repression and social
segregation, now it has the objective of promoting prisoner or interned conditions to reintegrate society in a harmonious way. Prison institutions need to be designed in order to develop knowledge and skills for prisoners, making them recognize themselves as subjects of rights and assigning new meaning to their social role. The right to education within prison is of great importance to empower the individual, reduce social inequalities and promote social reintegration after serving the sentence.
