O uso terapêutico da bandagem elástica como coadjuvante da fonoaudiologia em indivíduos portadores de disfunção temporomandibular

Abstract

Introduction: There are several factors that can interfere in human life that affect the functioning of the stomatognathic system, which can be emotional and/or physical factors, in which they present symptoms such as pain in the TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) region, crackling, headache, difficulties to open and close the mouth, pain when chewing, earache, limited opening of the mouth, dizziness, toothache, tinnitus, ear fullness and muscular and functional alterations of the stomatognathic system (QUINTO, 2002). Objective: The present research aims to determine which effects and the effectiveness of the use of elastic bandage as an adjunct in speech therapy in patients with Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD). Methodology: Literature review, where articles were searched in the LILACS, Google Academic, VHL and SCIELO databases that were published from the year 2014 on, which focus on the use of elastic bandage in patients diagnosed with TMD. Results: Initially, twenty articles were selected to read the abstracts and only four were chosen for the research. Chewing and swallowing are some of the movements affected in individuals with TMD, and can be treated by professionals in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. The bandage is a recently discovered resource that is being widely used as an adjunct to traditional therapy in several areas of speech therapy. There are few registered researches that show the importance and effectiveness of the use of the bandage in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, so the importance of encouraging more researches on the subject. Conclusion: The elastic bandage proved to be a very effective resource in speech therapy when working together with traditional therapy, bringing better results in fewer therapy sessions.
