Idosos e as transferências financeiras e trocas no contexto familiar e social no município de Maringá - PR

Abstract

The current Brazilian demographics data present a significant reduction in both fertility and mortality rates. This reduction has been associated to technological advances in the medicine field and may contribute for the growth of the elderly population. For a long time the elderly was characterized as a weight, a burden that the family ended up assuming after their retirement, however this picture has been changing and with it the family models as well. This qualitative-quantitative study was based on an inventory that allowed the analysis of the current family context in the municipality of Maringá, identifying the family arrangements where the elderly went from assisted to assisting, allowing to identify that it helps in caring for the home and in the creation of the grandchildren. Many remain in the job market becoming a source of security and shelter. Some family members benefit from the retirement and supplementary income of the elderly through the transfer of financial, material and affective resources; both strengthen relationships with benefits and solidarity. The elderly end up being supported, valued and necessary, having a sense of belonging and well being.
